Various targets Digital SLR: How far do they zoom?

I was just wondering .. I'm considering buying Nikon D40 or a Canon 100D that I am becoming more interested in photography, but still at an amateur level. To what extent are the zoom lenses? As a 18-50mm lens? To what extent is the zoom in real life? As 35x optical zoom on the standard Digital Cameras .. Thank you for responding. Have a great day.

It is a bit confusing when you try to Compare them to aim and shoot camera lenses. You can have different objectives that are all 3x, but will give you very different fields of view. For example the kit lens 18-55mm 3x zoom is a 100-300mm. The 18-55 range from a slight angle large for a slight telephoto. The 100-300mm is a telephoto focal length. To obtain more point we need to start with a goal that would be considered as normal or what the eye sees. For one of these cameras would be about normal 35mm. Everything takes longer than telephoto. Everything is shorter in wide angle. Thus, for example a target of 200 mm would give you a field of vision which was approximately 5.5x closer than the eye sees. A 18mm lens would give you a field of vision which seemed twice as far as the eye would see. There really is not all goals will give you the equivalent a 35x zoom. The closest your going to get is a 18-200mm that would give you a 11x zoom lens. Tamron made a 18-270mm lens would zoom 15x. The disadvantage with these long-term zoom, is that a lot of compromise involved in making an objective like this. They will not be as optically good to have a couple of shorter range zooms. I hope this helps.
