How can I connect a shotgun microphone for my camcorder?

(He says he has a little mic and was wondering if I can get some kind of card to run more shotgun microphone in (ie from a cable XLR 3-axis micro), or do I get a full line-in audio preamp thing? I currently film clips, when recording audio simultaneously through a line6 TonePort into my laptop. Any information you can give would help! Cheers.
